Cancer, supportive and palliative care
This research group in cancer supportive and palliative care (SUPAC) aims to inform nursing and healthcare practice and policy in cancer, supportive and palliative care through its collaborative programme of research. The group is led by Professor Alex Molassiotis, Professor of Cancer and Supportive Care.
Our aims
- To undertake high-quality research into SUPAC with focus on important issues for patients and those that contribute to practice and policy changes thus influencing the care that cancer patients receive nationally and internationally
- To develop research capacity in the field of SUPAC
- To underpin all research activities with the active engagement of the public and service users
The group is and will continue to be influenced in the next five years and beyond by two major national initiatives:
- National Cancer Survivorship Initiative Vision (PDF, DoH 2010) launched in 2008
- End of Life Care Strategy (PDF, DoH, July 2008)
During the past five years, group members have been working with the NCRI-funded Cancer Experiences Research Collaborative (CECo) and two of its three research themes/strands have been co-led by group senior members (Innovative Interventions for Symptoms theme by Professor Alex Molassiotis; Methodology theme by Professor Chris Todd) as well as the Capacity Building theme led by Dr Ziv Amir and subsequently Dr Gunn Grande. The collaborative has influenced the work of the group and has led to significant collaborations, which need to be maintained in order to produce high quality and multi-site research by bringing together experts across the collaborative.
Collaborations
While the strong and ongoing links with CECo have been mentioned above, other fruitful links include:
- Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer
- European Oncology Nursing Society
- National Cancer Research Institute Clinical Studies Groups (complementary therapies, palliative care, primary care)
- University of Toronto (Dr Doris Howell and Professor Sioban Nelson; Faculty of Nursing)

- Complex symptoms, aftercare and survivorship
Lead: Professor Alex Molassiotis - Palliative home care
