Student perspectives

What current students think of the social work programme

Susan WalkerSusan Walker (MA Social Work student)
"Course content is thorough; tutors are approachable, available and supportive... the range of course units is good as are the facilities - especially the library."

Ros HuntRos Hunt (PhD Social Work student)
"I particularly enjoyed the first year, which had some taught components; it broke me in gently after a long time away from academia."

Social work research

Research is an integral component of social work at the University and work undertaken by researchers has made a significant contribution to the development of policy, practice development and practice learning as well as underpinning the scope and quality of our teaching. Our research focuses on three key themes: Policy into practice evaluation; Children and families; Mental health.

Collaborations

As well as collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines within the School, the social work research group also enjoys collaborations with colleagues in the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at The University of Manchester.

Service user and carer partnerships

Partnerships with service users and carers are central to all aspects of social work education and research within the School. We have a number of partnerships but particularly work with Citizens as Trainers (CATS), a local forum. Service users and carers are actively involved in student recruitment and the development, delivery and evaluation of our courses.

General Social Care Council approval status

The General Social Care Council (GSCC) regularly review the provision of all universities providing social work qualifying courses. The letter below confirms GSCC re-approval until 2013.
